Last fall, with the help of parent volunteers and the support of the
LFHS administration, the Max Schewitz Foundation brought the Young
Hearts for Life ™EKG screening program to Lake Forest High School.
Over 900 LFHS students took advantage of the screening which was offered
at no cost to the student. Students at Libertyville High School were
screened recently, bringing the total to more than 2,000 students.
Testing identified 25 students with abnormal results, most notably
two students with potentially life-threatening heart arrhythmias. Oftentimes,
in this age group the first sign of cardiac disease is death, as it
was for Max, a 2004 graduate of LFHS. These two students can now seek
preventative care.
This next school year, the Max Schewitz Foundation will return to provide
EKG screening for incoming freshman and students missed in the fall, and
again will cover the screening costs ($30,000 for two-day screens and $20,000
for a one-day screening). The primary fundraiser for the Max Schewitz Foundation
is the evening Maxtravaganza, held June 21st at Lake Forest Sportscars.
Student volunteers are also needed for this event. This is a fun way
to earn community service hours and give back to a local charity. Contact
Kathy O’Hara at school or Tracy Hill, LFHS Maxtravaganza Coordinator,
at 847/283-9161 or tracysofa@comcast.net
Please support the Max Schewitz Foundation, either by attending the fundraiser,
making a donation, or volunteering your time. Tickets are $60 and include
drinks, a casual, sit-down family style dinner provided by area restaurants,
entertainment, and a chance to win a flat screen TV with Wii system. Call
Mary Beth at 847/234-2206 or at MSchewitz@aol.com or visit the website
