College Process

Applying to College Step-by-Step Here

Seniors!
Have you begun working on your college essay? Do you know the difference between a college essay and a personal statement? Do you know how to create a resume for college applications? If the answer to any of these questions is “no,” then you need to attend “The College Essay and Resume Writing Workshop.” The Counseling Department will be holding six sessions on those very topics. You only need to attend one. The first three will be held on Tuesday, September 14 during the lunch periods and the second three will be held on Wednesday, September 22 also during the lunch periods. They will all be held in the Library Classroom. Since they are during your lunch period, please feel free to bring your lunch with you. Also bring a pen and some paper. There will be handouts but you will want to take notes. For those of you who attended a summer workshop, this workshop will be very similar with the addition of resume writing which was not covered in the summer workshop. All seniors are welcome to attend only if it is during your lunch period or a free hour. No pink slips will be signed. Any questions, please see Mrs. Gleason in the College/Career Resource Center, Room 103A

  5. Apply to College!
Be Informed of College Application Deadlines!

The Counseling department would like to inform college-bound students that it is important to refer to each individual school as to what is the submission deadline for applying to the college either on-line or through the mail with their completed applications and essays and/or personal statements, if required.
It is important to find out if the deadline is a "postmarked" deadline or if it is an "in the admission office" deadline.
All students applying to college should file their requests for transcripts in the College Transcripts Office, Room 103.
      Students must:
    • file their Junior Questionnaire with their counselor
    • file their Junior Parent Information Sheet with their counselor
    • provide teachers an addressed stamped envelope for recommendations for each college
    • complete a Request for Transcript form for each application
    • The first holiday schedule deadline for Senior College Application Process is December 4, 2009 . All students should file their transcript requests with Mrs. Hall, Transcript Office, Room 103 two weeks prior to the application deadline date. Due to the fact that the Transcript Office will be closed over the Winter Holiday, those applications with a deadline of January 1, 2010 must be in the Office Friday, December 4, 2009 by Noon. Those with a January 15, 2010 deadline must be in by Noon on Monday, January 4, 2010.
    • Include a 6x9 envelope properly addressed to the college or institution with every transcript request (no postage necessary). (Envelopes are available in the Transcript Office at no charge.
  6. College Applications Reminders:

When preparing your applications, you no longer need to turn in a Secondary School Report Form or Counselor Signature Form from the College or Common Application. Lake Forest High School has created a Secondary School Report Form (SSR) and this form will be mailed out automatically.

Students’ Portion of the College Application Deadline-Students either applying on-line or through the mail with their completed applications and essays and/or personal statements, if required, should refer to each individual school as to what their deadlines are and whether they are “postmarked” deadlines or “in the admission office” deadlines. Allow 10 days for LFHS to process your request.

A counselor signature is required on the Early Decision Forms.

Teacher recommendations require a stamped, standard business size envelope, addressed to the college with Lake Forest High School as the return address.

When checking applications on Naviance, it will always say no request under the Transcript column. The information regarding the transcript is stored in another Naviance area that the students cannot access.

Once the transcript is mailed, please allow one week for it to arrive at the college and three to four weeks for the college to scan and process all the materials before it is posted.

    NCAA Eligibility Center Information:
If you plan to participate in intercollegiate athletics at an NCAA Division I or II institution or you plan to “walk-on” you must register by visiting the web site at: www.ncaaclearinghouse.net. From the home page, you should click on “Prospective Student-Athletes” which will link you to the necessary information. As a prospective student-athlete at a Division I or II institution, you have certain responsibilities to attend to before you may participate. Information concerning who needs to register with the Eligibility Center and what documents should be submitted can be found in The Guide for College-Bound Student-Athletes which can be downloaded from their website.

You will need to fill out a “Request for Transcript” card at the end of your Junior year (not before) or the beginning of your Senior year. They will be mailed out to the Eligibility Center in late September or early October.
