May 2008 HIGHLIGHTS
When you really take the time to think about it, every little thing
you do affects someone in some way. Even if that one time does not
affect you, your actions can affect others. This is why Students
Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) is proud to
present ONCE.
One Night Changes Everything
Wednesday April 30
5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
at CROYA
ONCE is an opportunity for students to think about their actions and
how underage drinking affects one’s self and others. A
cook-out, games, several drunk driving simulations such as the fatal
vision golf cart, prizes, and a press conference will be at CROYA.
One night of drinking can’t make up for a lifetime. With Prom
around the corner this message is more important than ever. Underage
drinking and driving increases the risk of accidents. Just one night
of drinking can change everything.
SADD club is working hard to make sure students are safe and live life
to the fullest.
ONCE is a product of SADD’s ONE campaign. In January, SADD applied
for a grant sponsored by the Illinois Department of Transportation,
Allstate Insurance, and Ford Motor Company. Lake Forest High School
was chosen out of more than 200 schools to receive this $2000 grant
to develop and implement a safe driving campaign. As a school we have
come up with the ONE campaign. Lake Forest High School is working as
a group to produce the best campaign we can. The English Department,
Telecom, Wellness, Driver’s Ed, CROYA, FOCUS, and LEAD are just
some of the great helpers. For example, Telecom classes have put forward
great effort in creating public service announcements to promote safe
driving and prevent drinking. Three telecom student’s pieces
have been chosen to represent our school. On April 3, students introduced
the campaign at Pre-Prom parent meetings. Driver’s Ed classes
watched videos concerning safe driving. Healthy Lifestyles classes
created brochures and resource cards that will provide information
about how to get help if you or someone you know has a problem with
alcohol.
The ONCE campaign will kick-off on April 30 from
5:00 pm – 8:00 pm at CROYA. SADD is excited to co-sponsor this
event with FOCUS, CROYA, and Speak Up! Prevent Underage Drinking. Students
will learn about the negative effects of underage drinking and drunk
driving while having a great time with friends. It can make a difference
for you and others, so just remember one night changes everything.
March 2008 HIGHLIGHTS
Operation Teen Safe Driving is a statewide
initiative that is modeled on the nationally recognized Ford Driving
Skills for Life high school-based pilot project implemented in 2006
by Ford, the Governors Highway Safety Association, IDOT, the Illinois
State Police and local partners that halted an epidemic of 15 teen
fatalities in Tazewell County in 2005 and 2006. It is also designed
to build on the momentum from new laws aimed at teen drivers, stemming
from Secretary of State Jesse White’s Teen Driving Task Force that give Illinois some
of the most stringent teen driving laws in the nation.
Lake Forest High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions
(SADD) club was selected from a pool of over 200 candidates to receive
a $2000 grant to implement a safe driving campaign, focusing specifically
on the issue of Driving Under the Influence. SADD will be teaming
with various classes and clubs at LFHS to implement this initiative.
Specifically, Telecom-Video Production is going to develop a Public
Service Announcement campaign based on the ideas developed by seniors
in five Writing for Mass Communications classes. Slogans or tag lines
initiated from their brainstorming sessions will help shape the
multi-media campaign that will culminate in videos shown through
a variety of mediums before Prom week. Telecom-Animation and Graphic
Design students will submit animated and logo designs to be included
in the various student work across the various mediums; from traditional
advertising campaigns to communicating to their peers through new
media. The Prevent Underage Drinking Coalition of Lake Forest and
Lake Bluff and Knollwood will also be involved in the campaign as
they provide another avenue for students to voice their unique visual
ideas and stories with the community.
LFHS will be competing for a first place
prize of $5000 to go toward a Post-Prom Party and well as the opportunity
for several students to participate in the Ford Ride & Drive,
where they will receive hands-on behind the wheel instruction by
professional instructors.
in an effort to educate students and staff, while
raising awareness about this often stigmatized illness.
On Friday,
January 25, Erika's Lighthouse, a student-run group from New
Trier High School, will be presenting a student panel during 4, 5,
and 6 periods in the DMT. The presentation will feature
personal stories written by teens describing what depression feels
like, how to tell when a friend is in need, how to handle a friend's
return from the hospital, and how to help. We encourage students
to attend during their lunch periods.
