Career Exploration

For students, deciding what career to pursue can be an overwhelming task. Students who have a general or specific idea of the career they would like to pursue have an easier time choosing a college major, and getting started right away into the coursework required for that career. Our desire is to help students explore their strengths and interests, and to encourage self-awareness in these areas. We encourage career related internships and summer jobs, and work with our students to help them through the process of finding a field of study that fits their unique strengths and interests. Career exploration opportunities through LFHS:

College/Career Resource Center
The CRC contains many books and resources on career exploration such as: The Occupational Outlook Handbook which is based on John Holland's career theory and can be checked out at the desk.

Campbell Interest and Skills Inventory
This well researched evaluation tool helps students by asking questions about their strengths and interests. They are scored by comparing these to the strengths and interests of those who have reported being happy with their jobs.  All Sophomores take this inventory with their counselor in the spring and receive the results in the early fall of junior year.

Career Exploration is Back!

The APT is once again sponsoring the Career Exploration Program which will take place during the long weekend of April 25 – 27. While the junior class is taking the Prairie State Exams on Wednesday and Thursday (with a free day on Friday), all other students will have three days to take advantage of the opportunity to explore their career interests and/or to volunteer their time for service. Thanks to the combined efforts of Kathy O’Hara (LFHS Service Coordinator) and Nini Lustig (Director – Volunteer Center LF/LB), last year’s program provided over 100 unique opportunities to LFHS students. We are hoping to expand the program even further this year and need parents, family members and friends to consider giving their time to mentor a student in their professional fields or volunteer capacities. If you are interested, please contact Kathy O’Hara, 847-582-7424 or kohara@d115.org, or
Sarah Glynn 847-615-9271 or slglynn2@comcast.net.
