South Regional wrapup--Lake Forester
01/19/08
On Saturday, the varsity earned wins over Grayslake
North and North Chicago with scores of 46-27 and 57-15,
respectively, to finish the year at 10-10. Colin
Porter, Josh Wren, Charlie DeYoung, Dane Shea, Chris Habjan,
Chris Casper, and Colton Kunde picked up two more wins
each. Freshmen, Bonamico Jacobs, won his first
varsity match with a come from behind pin against
Grayslake North.
Also on Saturday, the younger Scout wrestlers had
a great finish at the 50th Annual Sophomore Ott Bay Tournament
in Waukegan. Although
the Scouts entered wrestlers in only 9 of the 14 weight classes,
they earned an impressive 4th place finish out of the 10 schools
entered. They were led by tournament champions Matt Ten
Pas (fall, tech fall, major decision, and decision at 135 lbs.)
and Max Bagnoli (fall, tech fall and 2 decisions at 140 lbs.). Sam
Howard added a 3rd place at 152 lbs., and freshmen Nick Van
Antwerp (171 lbs.) and Max Keefe (189 lbs.) each earned 4th
place medals.

The LFHS wrestling team is peaking at the right
time. On Friday, the Scouts earned an impressive win over
Zion-Benton by a score of 45-30. Josh Wren (fall 2:40), Charlie DeYoung (fall
:53), Kyle Palmer (fall 5:45), Dane Shea (fall 1:22), Robert
Nelson (fall 3:54), Chris Habjan (fall 2:25), and Colton Kunde
(fall :31) led the way. Nick Sandstrom earned another
win by decision.
01/10--01/12/08--Varsity
The Scouts continued this season's tradition of
wrestling well, but giving up too many points on forfeits. On
Thursday, after giving up 18 points on forfeits, LF lost
to Stevenson with a final score of 43-27. In
the eight matches wrestled, Josh
Wren and Chris Casper each had pins, Chris
Habjan won by a tech fall and Colin Porter, Charlie
DeYoung, and Kyle Palmer each won by decision.
On Friday, the Scouts again gave up 18 points on forfeits and
lost to Lake Zurich 42-15. Palmer, Peter Bassick,
and Patrick Looby each wrestled well.
On Saturday, the Scouts ran into a tough Glenbrook
North team and lost 58-9. Jake Quaid, DeYoung, and Casper
were the only Scout winners. In the second competition,
they recovered to defeat Glenbrook South 32-28. Palmer
pinned his opponent in 1:02 and DeYoung won by a tech fall. Wren,
Jake Quaid, Bassick, Sam Howard, and Habjan each won by
decision

On Saturday, the Freshmen wrestling
team competed at the prestigious Fred Tessler Invitational
at Woodstock High School. The young Scouts placed
5th out of 12 teams at this event. Several Scouts had outstanding
efforts, including three champions. Connor Bull (103
lbs.) won a hard-fought 4-1 decision to claim the tournament
crown. Max Keefe (189 lbs.) recorded a pin in the
finals over a highly-regarded opponent from Fremd. Jason
Fleisner (215 lbs.) won the 3rd championship for the Scouts
with a thrilling 6-4 decision over his opponent.
The Scouts had several other strong efforts on Saturday. Nick
Van Antwerp placed 2nd at 171 lbs.. Van Antwerp made
the match exciting as he put his opponent on his back
in the final period. At 125 lbs., Bonamico Jacobs
wrestled a strong tournament to place 3rd. Liam
Connell placed 4th at 160 lbs and Tyson Dethlefsen
placed 6th. Joe Hargit
placed 6th at 152 lbs.
12/31/07
At the Carmel Tournament on New Year's Eve,
the Scouts had four placers with tournament champs in Connor
Bull and Kyle Palmer who each won with pins in the finals. Chris
Casper took 2nd and Ben Howard came in 3rd.
12/28/07
Charlie DeYoung improved
his record to 15-3 with two wins over Wheeling and Carmel! Jake
Quaid, Andrew Keller, and
Chris Habjan also picked up two more wins. The
Scouts won 6 of 9 matches against Carmel but lost the meet
because of forfeits. Patrick Looby, Chris
Habjan, Jake Quaid, Charlie
DeYoung, and Colton Kunde dominated
the triangular with pins. Other winners were
Dane Shea and Sam Howard.

Chris Casper, Charlie DeYoung, Chris
Habjan, and Jake Quaid were selected captains.
12/22/07
The Scouts returned from the Maine East Quad with victories
over Vernon Hills and Maine East and a loss against a strong
St. Charles East squad. They
began the morning with a close win of 40-31 over Vernon Hills. Josh
Wren, Kyle Palmer, Dane Shea, and Chris Habjan led the team with pins
while Colin Porter, Jake Quaid and Charlie DeYoung won by decision. In
the second round, the Scouts lost to St. Charles East by a score of
57-17. The only Lake Forest victories were by DeYoung (fall
2:26), Peter Bassick (tech fall 17-2) and Chris Habjan (fall 4:45). The
Scouts came back to win the third round with a win over Maine East
by a score of 56-18. DeYoung, Palmer and Will Howard won with
pins, Wren and Quaid won by decision, and five Scouts won by forfeit.
12/15/07
On Saturday the Scouts wrestled in the Mundelein
Bad Mark Invitational, placing third as a team. Colin Porter and Josh
Wren were tournament champions. Charlie DeYoung, Robert Nelson,
and Colton Kunde took second. Chris Habjan, Dane Shea, and
Jake Quaid took third.
On the same day, the freshmen team wrestled
in the "Don
Bergsrud" Freshmen
Invite hosted by Lake Forest High School. The
Scouts ended up placing 6th in the team standings; however,
man-for-man the team wrestled phenomenally. The Scouts only had
seven point scoring wrestlers--four of which ended up in the
finals. A
fifth point scorer ended up in the 3rd place match. Champions
for the Scouts were: Jack Anderson at 152 pounds, Nick Van Antwerp
at 171 pounds, and Max Keefe at 189 pounds. Van Antwerp
won an exciting match in the finals with a come-from-behind fall,
avenging a loss from earlier in the season. Also, Liam
Connell placed 2nd at 160 pounds, dropping a close 5-3 decision
in the finals. Jason Fleisner also placed 4th at 215
pounds. Two non-point scoring wrestlers placed 3rd in their
respective weights. Tyson Dethlefsen (160) and Joe Hargit
(152) both wrestled tough to come home with a medal despite not
being point scorers.
12/07-08/07
Friday night the Scouts lost to Round Lake in a close meet
34-29. After giving up 12 points to forfeits, the Scout
wrestled great with pins coming from Kyle Palmer, Dane Shea,
and Colton Kunde.
The Lake Forest Scouts competed Saturday at the Prospect
Tournament. This young Lake Forest Team had 9 place
winners. Charlie DeYoung placed 2nd at 130, Chris Habjan
took 4th at 171 with a thrilling comeback victory over
the 4th seeded wrestler from Round Lake. Dane Shea took
5th place at 145 and has racked up his seventh win this season. Kyle
Palmer took 7th at 140 and Eric Thompson took 8th at 119. Our
young sophomores moved up to the varsity for this tournament
and did an excellent job. Colin Porter and Andrew Keller
placed 6th. Colton Kunde placed 7th and Matt Ten Pas placed
8th.
12/01/07
The Freshmen team put in another strong performance
and placed 3rd out of 8 teams at the Carmel Freshmen Invite on
Saturday. The
Scouts had 154 points behind only Maine South (1st) and host Carmel
(2nd). There were several
outstanding individuals for the Scouts, highlighted by 3 champs. Connor
Bull (103 lbs.) and Bonamico Jacobs (125 lbs.) both recorded falls in the finals. At
160 lbs., Liam Connell edged teammate Tyson Dethlefsen in overtime to capture
the tournament crown. Other outstanding efforts were from Tyson Dethlefsen
(2nd, 160 lbs.), Jason Fleisner (2nd 215 lbs.), Jack Anderson (2nd, 152 lbs.),
Nick Van Antwerp (3rd, 171lbs.), and Ben VanVlissengen (4th, 135 lbs.)

Congratulations to the Sophomore wrestling
team at the Wauconda
Tournament on Saturday. Tournament
Champions were: Colin Porter at 103 pounds, Will Howard
at 171 pounds, Andrew Keller at 189 pounds, and Colton Kunde at
285. Patrick Looby took 2nd at 171. Max Bagnoli,
Matt Ten Pas, and Sam Howard took third place.
11-24-07
The Freshmen wrestling team placed 6th out of
16 teams with 102 team points at the Rockford East Tournament despite
having only 10 points scorers. The Scouts had the 2nd best
finish out of NSC teams. Out of our conference, only tournament
champion Warren performed better. Placers for the Scouts
included Connor Bull (1st place, 103 lbs), Bonamico Jacobs (2nd,
125 lbs), Joe Hargit (3rd, 152 lbs), Liam Connell (4th, 160), and
Nick Van Antwerp (5th, 171lbs.). Other strong performances
were put in by Ralph Clavaria (2-2, 189 lbs) and Jason Fleisner
(2-2, 215 lbs).
