Food For Thought: Why Gender Matters
In the last several years, much publicity has been given to gender-based differences in learning styles and personal interactions. These differences can be seen in the current disparity between the genders on college campuses: Most campuses across the US currently enroll 60% females to 40% males, and by 2011 will confer 140 bachelor’s degrees to women for every 100 conferred upon men. Boys significantly outnumber girls in special education programs as well as in numbers of high school dropouts. Some observers believe that we are in a state of crisis in the state of education for boys.
A group of Lake Forest High School teachers have been exploring these issues by reading the Leonard Sax book, Why Gender Matters, and participating in on-line discussions, which spilled over to lunchroom and office discussions as well. All agreed that the ideas raised by Dr. Sax stimulated the liveliest faculty conversations in some time. We encourage any parents who want to investigate the topic further to read Dr. Sax’s book (available in paperback).
