This project was one element of the larger “One Campaign” which
Jennifer
Edgington and Maggie Ross led through SADD (Students Against Destructive
Decisions) who originated the idea through administrative assistance
from Jim Thiel, Assistant Principal and Jay Hoffmann, Principal. The
campaign won the Operation Teen Safe Driving Contest for Region #3 (the
Chicago area) which provided $7,000.00 more in grant money to continue
the program next year.
The five Telecom-video production classes worked with the five Writing
for Mass Comm classes (Matt Dewar, Amy Birtman, Stephanie O'Hara, Barb
Silber (for Carolyn Konz) and Peter Lubliner) to develop 30 second or
1
minute videos that impacted their peers at LFHS. Three were selected
by
a student group made up of SADD members as finalist (Hunter, Sophia
Demas and Ryan Sager) and they were all shown at the CROYS Once event
in
late April.
CROYA's fantastic event, which received great media attention from
the Tribune and then CBS2 Morning news, helped raise awareness about
underage drinking in our community. The Underage Drinking Prevention
campaign, led by our BOE member Dick Block and Stacy Vermylen, were also
key in providing feedback on the PSAs and focusing the message to the
parents in our community about the issue.
It was a great model of how cross-curricular work can be done in our
school. Thanks to Christine Friedman for working with Cody Vandenberg
in creating an Animated logo and Carolyn Bielski who facilitated a logo
contest through her Graphic Design Club, which Kelly Christensen won. Drivers
Ed also participated, through Chris Landvick's facilitation, and many
more!
