The Science Department received a grant from Illinois Clean Energy
for a solar panel.
January  2008 HIGHLIGHTS
The solar panel is now fully functional, providing energy for our school. The AP Environmental Science and Environmental Geoscience students are able to use the data in their classes. The study of solar energy is an integral part of the environmental science curriculum. There are currently four environmental science courses offered at LFHS. These include AP Environmental Science (82 junior/senior students), Advanced Environmental Geoscience Honors (30 junior/senior students), Advanced Environmental Geoscience (26 junior/senior students), and Environmental Geoscience (120 freshman/sophomore students). The solar panels are located on the south side of the building, on the second floor roof. The panels are visible from many classrooms on the third floor. They face south and have been designed to be adjusted to track the sun throughout the different seasons. In the winter season, the panels will be tilted at an angle of 57degrees. In the summer, they will be tilted at a 27 degree angle. This enables the panels to capture as much of the sun’s energy as possible.
LFHS will participate in a Solar Celebration that will take place on Earth Day and will include a “Solar Olympics.” Teams of five will be formed from our environmental science students and environmental club members. They will begin meeting one month before the competition to complete their designs for the following events: Solar Car Races, Solar Oven Bake-Off, Solar Powered Rube Goldberg Contest, Solar Poem Recital.
